Adult Therapy:
We all have times in our life where we need some support with issues that are getting in the way of us living the life we want to lead, or just making every day hard. Whether you are experiencing stress and anxiety, or feeling low, depressed and lacking motivation - these can all take their toll on your relationships, work and home life. We recognise that a range of factors may be involved in your current difficulties, such as career or relationship changes, adjusting to a new life stage or developing poor health. We offer short term therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), to treat many common issues, where you will learn and practise strategies that help you work on the tricky thoughts, feelings and behaviours that keep the problem going. We also provide longer term psychological therapy, where you can work on understanding how some of your thoughts, feelings or behaviours became established - perhaps by exploring early life experiences, and how these might continue to impact you now.
Common issues we help with: panic attacks, phobias, depression, postnatal depression, worry and anxiety, menopause related symptoms, relationship issues, low self-esteem, parenting problems and transitions around becoming a parent.
What happens first?
First, contact us using the web form or phone number, and your therapist will get in touch to arrange a free telephone consultation. They will ask you about the main issues you are seeking support for, explain how they work and answer any questions you have. You will be offered an initial online assessment appointment. This extended appointment is an opportunity to find out more about your difficulties, how long you have been experiencing them and the impact they are having on you and the different areas of your life. You will be supported by your therapist to explore some targets that you would like to work on in therapy. It also helps you get a feel for how you and your therapist would work together, and for you to find out whether they seem like a good fit for you.
Regular therapy:
Starting treatment, you will arrange a specific number of sessions - typically 4-6 - before reviewing your progress. Therapy sessions are scheduled weekly or fortnightly, during which you can safely explore the issues that are bringing you to therapy. Together you and your therapist will identify realistic and practical goals for you to work towards during your sessions, which will aim to strengthen and empower you. Between therapy sessions, you may be given exercises or tasks to carry out that fit with the goals you're working on.
