Separation, divorce and co-parenting:
We work with individuals at all stages of the transition to becoming co-parents. Whether you are at the initial stages and considering how and when to tell your child about the separation, or are already working on creating separate households and routines, it is helpful to work with experienced professionals to ensure you make changes that are mindful of everyone involved. Where you are experiencing difficulties in more established co-parenting dynamics, we will help you to explore strategies that support you and your child. We are able to work flexibly with one or both parents in whichever way you prefer (e.g. alternating or split sessions with each parent, both together, one alone, etc).
Common issues we help with: planning to tell children that you are separating; establishing routines; setting boundaries; improving communication; managing child emotional or behavioural issues relating to separation/co-parenting dynamic.
What happens first?
First, contact us using the web form or phone number, and your therapist will get in touch to arrange a free telephone consultation. They will find out about the main issues you are seeking support for, explain how they work and answer any questions you have. You will be offered an initial online assessment appointment. This extended appointment is an opportunity to explore the difficulties that you are experiencing in your co-parenting relationship and/or with your child. From there, your therapist can explore the main concerns with each parent, and then consider the influence or impact of these on you both as individuals and co-parents, and on your child/children. With this understanding, you will be supported to create some targets to work towards in therapy, as part of a bespoke treatment plan. Where it seems that your child's difficulties would benefit from assessment and/or treatment your therapist will advise you of this.
Regular therapy:
Therapy sessions take place online over video call, are attended by one or both parents depending on your preference, and can be scheduled weekly or fortnightly. Starting the work together you will arrange a specific number of sessions - typically 3-4 - before reviewing progress towards the parenting targets. Between sessions you will work on specific strategies that have been discussed in sessions, or complete exercises or tasks that fit with your targets.
